I’m thrilled to finally share something that has been in the works for a long time: the official cover for my upcoming book, The Power of the Pivot. This book is the result of years of navigating life as a disabled entrepreneur, learning to adapt, and refusing to be boxed in by a world that rarely considers bodies and minds like mine.

When I first imagined what I wanted this book to represent visually, I knew the cover had to do more than catch the eye. It had to tell a story. I asked the designer to create something that represented disability with dignity and pride. I requested the inclusion of many disabled bodies as well as the colors of the LGBTQIA+ Pride flag. Not just because I wanted representation, but because I wanted this book to embody my lived experience and the values I hold close: authenticity, visibility, adaptability, and the right to thrive.

When I saw the finished cover for the first time, I cried. Not because I was overwhelmed with joy, though I was, but because I saw myself in every figure portrayed. The person in the wheelchair. The one leaning on a walker. The mother using a cane, showing up for her child’s Field Day despite pain and exhaustion. At different points in my life, I have been each one of them.

That image brought back memories that I do not often have the time or space to revisit. Memories of struggling to walk across the room. Of trying to be present for my children while experiencing debilitating symptoms from a neuromuscular disease that took away my independence without warning. Of sitting in doctors’ offices, waiting for answers that never came fast enough. Of trying to piece together a new version of life with a body that no longer obeyed.

These are the truths behind the pages of The Power of the Pivot.

My Journey as a Disabled Entrepreneur

Years ago, I was a veteran educator pursuing my third master’s degree. I was raising a family and planning a future built around stability, structure, and public service. I loved what I did. But chronic illness had other plans.

After experiencing paralysis and going through an extended battle with diagnosis and treatment, I found myself out of the classroom and out of options. The Teacher’s Retirement Board deemed me disabled and revoked my teaching license. I applied for Social Security and was denied. The letter said, “We agree you can no longer work in education, but we believe you can work in some capacity.”

I remember reading that sentence over and over. What did “some capacity” even mean? And more importantly, what systems existed to help me figure out what that capacity looked like?

The answer was none. No pathway. No retraining programs. No transition supports for disabled professionals who could no longer perform in their chosen fields but still had knowledge, drive, and the need to earn an income.

So I created my own.

I started small, learning the ropes of freelance writing while juggling infusions, mobility issues, and the unpredictable nature of chronic illness. It was not easy. But over time, that freelance hustle grew into a business. Today, I am the founder of Connected Ghostwriting, LLC, a disability-owned business that employs a team, generates growing revenue, and allows me to support my family in ways I never imagined possible.

This book is an extension of that journey.

What The Power of the Pivot Offers

When people hear the word sustainability, they think of climate change, recyclable packaging, or renewable energy sources. And all of that matters. But sustainability is also about designing a business that doesn’t burn you out, physically or emotionally.

This matters even more for disabled entrepreneurs. Most of us do not have the option to work on-site or meet the same metrics as a 40-hour-a-week employee. So we adapt. We create lean business models that use less energy, require fewer raw materials, and operate with minimal overhead. That’s not just efficient. It’s a form of social responsibility.

Building With Margin: What It Looks Like in Practice

This book is not a traditional business guide. You will not find advice on hustling harder, pulling all-nighters, or pretending mindset can erase medical realities. Instead, The Power of the Pivot is written for people who need an entirely different model of success.

It is for the person trying to run a business in between medical appointments. For the mother who can give two good hours a day before her body shuts down. For the caregiver managing another person’s care while trying to keep food on the table. For the disabled entrepreneur with dreams too big to ignore and a body too complex to conform.

The book is structured around both mindset and strategy. It opens with the internal work we often need to do after a life-altering diagnosis or disabling injury. I share the mental shifts that helped me stop grieving the life I thought I was supposed to have and start building the one I actually needed.

Later chapters dive into business-building from a place of reality. I cover how to create offers that fit limited energy, how to prioritize sustainability over scale, and how to set boundaries in a world that rewards overwork. I talk about what it means to build a disability-owned business that honors both your talents and your limitations.

Stories From the Book

One story I share in the book takes place in a grocery store parking lot. I had just finished shopping and was using an electric wheelchair. I stood up from the wheelchair. Leaning on my cane. My legs were burning, and I could feel the telltale muscle weakness that meant I needed to sit down–soon. A man nearby watched me struggle, then approached and said, “You’re too young to need that. You should try exercise.”

That moment wrecked me. I had been a runner. A weightlifter. A healthy eater. I had done all the things society tells us to do, and my body still betrayed me. What I needed was support, not unsolicited advice. That moment, and many others fueled my commitment to show up for people like me, to create tools and resources that treat disabled people as whole, capable, and powerful.

A Book for the Margins

The Power of the Pivot is not about achieving some shiny version of success. It is about building something meaningful in the margins of your life. It is about redefining success so that it includes rest, flexibility, and health. It is about seeing yourself not as broken, but as resourceful. Not as less-than, but as powerful.

You are not lazy.
You are not unmotivated.
You are not undisciplined.

You are navigating a world that was not built for your body, your energy, or your reality.

This book helps you reclaim your power, pivot with purpose, and build a business that fits your actual life, not someone else’s fantasy.
